Why resizing quality varies so much between tools

Shrinking an image a long way in one step produces visible aliasing — jagged diagonals and shimmering detail — because too much information is discarded at once. Halving repeatedly and finishing with the remainder looks markedly better and costs almost nothing, so that is what happens here: no single step reduces either dimension by more than half.

Enlarging is the one thing no tool can do well. Pixels that were never captured cannot be invented, so upscaling only ever produces a softer version of what you had. Resizing here only ever reduces.

Nothing is uploaded — and you can check

Conversion happens on your own device, inside this browser tab. There is no server to receive your files, which is a stronger guarantee than a promise not to look at them. Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and convert something: you will see no request carrying your image. The page keeps working with your network disconnected.
