Why 50 KB?
Fifty kilobytes is the classic passport and visa photo limit. It is tight enough that a phone photo will not pass unedited, but generous enough that a properly cropped headshot still looks sharp — which is why so many identity systems settled on it. The usual mistake is cropping after compressing: crop to the required aspect ratio first, so none of your 50 KB is spent on background you were about to discard.

How the exact size is reached
